Call For Chapter Proposals:
Relational Ethics
CFP: Relational Ethics
Edited by Prof. David Gunkel (Northern Illinois University) and Dr. Abootaleb Safdari (University of Bremen)
We invite proposals for chapters (two spots are available) in an edited volume to be published by Springer tentatively titled “Relational Ethics” .
In recent decades, there has been a significant shift toward relational approaches in how we think about the moral and ontological status of different entities ranging from humans and animals to technological artifacts and the environment. These approaches mark a departure from Cartesian-based thinking, which traditionally posits sharp dualities between subjects and objects, individuals and society, and the natural and the cultural. Instead, they go beyond these dualities and challenge the conventional moral and metaphysical order deeply ingrained in our thinking and introduce a new conceptual and methodological framework. This edited volume aims to bring together the various branches and explore the challenging and critical themes that have emerged under the banner of relational ethics.
However, relational ethics is not a unified, homogeneous field of study. Some approaches in this domain are based on Western philosophical traditions, such as phenomenological and feminist philosophy, while others are based on non-Western traditions, such as indigenous cosmologies, Confucianism, the African philosophies of Ubuntu and Indian moral and legal philosophy. Some focus on technological artifacts such as robots and AI systems, while others consider artifacts more broadly. Finally, some of them are more concerned with the entities of the natural environmental as opposed to human-made technological things.
